Micheal Ward: Young Inspiration going from Strength to Strength

After his role in Netflix's 2019 reboot of Top Boy, young actor Micheal Ward has gone from strength to strength and has become an inspiration to most young boys in this day and age. He’s helped raise the bar recently for putting a voice to timely Black-centered stories that are too rarely told. He has managed to do this in Netflix’s Top boy, Rapman’s Blue story movie and most recently on BBC’s Small Axe.

Born in Jamaica but raised in Romford, Ward started his career by modelling in tracksuits and athletic wear for JD sports. This is instantly an inspirational achievement. It means a lot to young men from similar backgrounds to see him on this platform and could potentially encourage them to aspire to be in a similar position.

Ward is more known for his leading roles in probably two of the most well-known portrayals of gang culture in modern day society. The 22-year-old had his big break playing lead roles Marco in Rapman’s Blue Story Movie and Jamie, an East London gang leader juggling family life and the streets in Netflix’s Top Boy (co-produced by Drake). This really opened the door for numerous opportunities for young Ward as since then he has continued to fulfil his dreams and go from strength to strength. This is highlighted through his recent career achievements - NME Award for Best Film Actor and BAFTA Rising Star Award.

His journey is seen as an inspiration to a lot of young people, especially with there being a lot of negative pathways in certain environments and a hunger for positive opportunities away from those environments or backgrounds. Micheal Ward has shown that there are many different possibilities to change your life and make a name for yourself but it all comes down to hard work and determination.
